Snowboarding had a major spike in growth in the nineties and the early two-thousands. Since then that sharp increase has tapered off, but it continues to be a well-loved sport that many people, especially young people, enjoy.
Snowboarding is also very popular in the Great Lakes region. David Berkowitz of Chicago has been snowboarding since he was a kid, and has grown very proficient in the sport. His favorite places to snowboard near his hometown of Chicago are Villa Olivia, (right outside of Chicago), Four Lakes Alpine Snowsports (forty minutes away from Chicago) and Raging Buffalo (about an hour from downtown).
One of the reason snowboarding grew in popularity in the nineties was because skateboarding had just become very popular as well. Berkowitz is also an excellent skateboarder, partially because there are some similarities between the two sports, though not many. Berkowitz finds that there is more similarity between surfing and snowboarding.
If you’re looking to get into snowboarding, there are a few things you should know. First, you’re going to fall, and it’s going to hurt. Don’t let that discourage you. Just get back on the board and keep trying, and know that from the falls you are going to learn how to balance better.
Don’t overdress, or you’ll be overheated. Just because it’s cold outside doesn’t mean you need a ton of layers. You should make sure your clothes are non-cotton and your outer layer is waterproof. David Berkowitz Chicago keeps an extra hoodie with him just in case the temperature drops unexpectedly.
Before you rent your snowboard, you need to figure out if you’ll be leading with your left foot (regular) or your right foot (goofy). Once you are on the slope, you need to know that the snowboarders downhill from you have the right of way, while you have the right of way to those who are uphill from you.
