Surfing is an incredible sport that is terribly exciting and adrenaline-filled. You often find yourself in beautiful spots where the views and the weather just can’t get any better. If you have been looking at the waves, trying to decide if surfing is going to be your next adventure, there are a number of tips and tricks of the trade that will help you stay safe and happy in the water. David Berkowitz, a professional photographer, based in Chicago, Illinois, recommends that new surfers keep the following in mind:
1. Attend surf classes or a camp. This way, you will be learning from people who know how to explain the best technique and have innovative ways of showing you the best ways to get started. Surfing with friends can be incredibly exciting at first, but for safety purposes, you are better able to learn correctly at the beginning of your surfing career to avoid any accidents.
2. If you come to a beach to surf and find that it is crowded with people, you may be better off adventuring off to another spot to surf. Crowded beaches can be dangerous and unenjoyable, especially when you’re first starting out and somewhat unsure of yourself.
3. If you plan on being more than just the occasional surfer, you absolutely must buy a good wetsuit and know how to take care of it. Buy a suit that is labeled 100% ultra-stretch suit rather than a regular or standard stretch. Some experts even recommend buying a suit that is a full size up for comfort level if you don’t anticipate going in any higher than chest-length water.
